“I am glad,” he said simply. “You are my ma… mishka.”

Why did she think he had intended to say something else? Her pulse thudded rapidly in her veins but before she could gather up the courage to ask him, Darla’s excited voice reached them as the girl raced up the stairs.

“This place is so cool. Is that red machine one of the pulse generators you were telling me about?”

“It is,” Mganak said evenly. “But how did you know? You were supposed to remain in your bunk until I came to release you.”

“Oops.” Darla gave him an unrepentant grin. “The ship came to a halt and I didn’t hear any shooting, so I peeked out the window. I figured it would be all right. Can I go out and look at all the equipment?”

“No.” When her face fell, Mganak relented. “Not yet, anyway. Once I am sure of the situation, you can take a look around. Where is Davy?”

“Playing with his container of screws.” Darla sighed. “He doesn’t even care that we’re on a space station.”

“As long as he’s happy, that’s all that matters,” Wanda said gently.

“I know. But it’s so exciting!” The girl gave Mganak a pleading look. “Can you go see if it’s safe now? Please?”

“I am on my way.” Mganak gathered Wanda up in his arms. “I suppose you are going to want to see more as well.”

“You know I am.” She leaned in and pressed a teasing kiss to his neck, reveling in the intriguing texture that met her mouth. “I always want to see more.”

“Ooh.” Darla made a face as she clattered along next to them. “Stop all the mushy stuff.”

“But I enjoy this so-called mushy stuff,” Mganak said solemnly.

“Yeah, yeah. How would you feel if I started getting mushy with someone?”

Mganak growled. “That will never happen.”

Wanda’s breath caught, and she hid her face in Mganak’s neck, even as the other two continued to banter. It was so easy to forget that he wouldn’t be there when Darla grew up, when she started to date. Even if Wanda were able to adopt Davy and Darla as she so desperately wished, Darla would never have a father like Mganak. And what if she couldn’t adopt them? What if her disappearance changed things enough that she wouldn’t be considered a good candidate? Her heart filled with dread.

All of the thoughts, all of the concerns that she had pushed aside for the last week came roaring back. They had formed a family—not just her and the children but all of them—and Mganak was an essential part of it. She didn’t want to take the children away from him. She didn’t want to leave him.

The baby kicked as if in agreement, and Wanda felt Mganak’s arms tighten at the small movement. But was it best for her child if she stayed? Could she bring her up here, on a spaceship?

Mganak set her down as they reached hold. He gave her a concerned look, as if he sensed her worries, and his tail curved comfortingly around her wrist.
